Total Care – Dental

ATTENTION – Additional Charges in Dental Offices Related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Due to COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and dental offices re-open, some dental offices will be charging additional fees for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in an effort to keep dentists and members safe.  These fees can vary depending on the dental office you visit and are not a covered benefit under the NSTU Group Insurance Plan at this time.

The reason why these charges can vary anywhere from $0 - $60 is that the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) introduced these fees and established codes within the CDA system allowing dentists to formally charge fees related to PPE.  However, the Nova Scotia Dental Association has not established a fee structure for these codes at this time.  Without the fee structure, each dental practice is able to charge what they feel they need to in order to cover their additional overhead with the average charge being roughly $30.

Your NSTU Group Insurance Trustees will continue to monitor the impact charging these fees has on members and will advise of any further updates.

Benefit is not automatic. New members who commence work prior to October 1, must contact Johnson and enroll no later than October 15. Coverage will take effect the first of the month following receipt of the application form or request for coverage.

New members who commence work after October 1, must enroll within 31 days of commencing work. Coverage to take effect the first of the month following receipt of application.

Should you elect not to participate in the plan, but wish to participate at a future date, coverage will be effective September 1, following receipt of application. If you participate in the program, coverage will remain in effect for a full twelve month period, provided you remain an active member or employee of the NSTU.
